How to confirm the spring is broken
Look up at the torsion bar above the door. A healthy spring is one continuous tight coil. A broken spring has a clear 2 to 4 inch gap where the coil snapped. If you see that gap, the diagnosis is done.
Other tells: the opener strains for a second and reverses, the door opens 6 to 12 inches and stops, the door is impossibly heavy when you try to lift it manually, or the door is hanging crooked with one side lower than the other.
